Groves, General Leslie
1898–1970
   Groves was the US General appointed to supervise the Manhattan Project: the building of the atomic bomb. Groves was a West Point engineer with no competence in atomic physics and after BUSH’s first interview with him, Bush exclaimed ‘We’re in the soup.’ However Groves proved an extremely competent director who dealt with all the bureaucratic problems arising from the scientific research. He arranged the purchasing of uranium and selected the site for the bomb-making project at Los Alamos. He was convinced the bomb would win the war; his scientific colleagues however had misgivings. Groves strenuously urged its use to end the war.
